mentoring program
OzGrav is pleased to invite our members to participate in our mentoring program. Mentoring can be an important ingredient in career development and success, and can benefit both the mentee and the mentor. We are looking for people who are interested in either or both roles. For instance, a postdoc may wish to be a mentor to someone more junior, and a mentee to someone more senior.
This program is open to all OzGrav members, including students, researchers and professional staff. Our pool of mentors will include some people with experience inside and outside of academia, and we will endeavour to find a suitable mentor for all mentees, based on their career interests.
Objective: OzGrav’s mentoring program is designed to provide our members with the opportunity to discuss career‐related topics with a more senior individual who is not their current line manager. While the specific objectives of this program will vary from person to person, the overall aim is to help the mentee achieve their long-term career goals.
Program: The mentees are paired with a more senior person who wishes to act as a mentor. The frequency of meetings is up to the mentees/mentors, but typically they would meet two to three times each year. In the first instance, the mentoring relationship should be entered into for a six-month trial period, after which the participants should discuss the continuation of the arrangement. The format of the meetings should also be determined by the pair, e.g. over Skype, in person, at a conference etc, and those meetings will be confidential.
Once pairs have been assigned, we will send you further details and guidelines regarding: your roles and responsibilities, how to structure your first meeting, and how to establish objectives for the mentoring relationship.
